Get Heart Healthy!

Make small changes for a healthier, happier YOU!

Want to improve your heart health? Of course, you do! The first step is to recognize that diet plays an important role in cholesterol levels and heart health. Making nutritious food choices can help you feel better and obtain optimal health. Add these foods to your daily regime to give your cholesterol a push in the right direction.

Fiber
Including fiber from whole grains such as bran, oatmeal, brown rice, and quinoa can help improve blood cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and diabetes.

Nuts
Nuts are another flavorsome diet option to improve cholesterol. Eating a small handful of nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachios, and walnuts each day may help lower your risk of heart disease.

Avocados
Avocados are a super food that can improve LDL levels in overweight or obese people. Add them to salads or sandwiches, or even eat them alone or snack on them with raw vegetables. Avocados pack a nutritional punch so include them in your diet often!

Green Tea
Green tea is a much healthier alternative to sodas and sugary beverages. Green tea reduces bad cholesterol, improving the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol. In addition, it helps regulate glucose levels and may protect against the formation of clots...the main cause of heart attacks.

Red Wine
Drink your vino! Drinking one to two glasses of red wine per day may help lower your bad cholesterol while increasing your good cholesterol. That's all we need to know...enjoy!

Beans
Yes... they really are good for your heart. Beans are loaded with fiber, which slows the absorption of cholesterol in specific foods. What does that mean?? Lower cholesterol and a healthier heart! Opt for black, kidney, or pinto beans because each supplies about one-third of your daily fiber needs. Make these easy adjustments to your diet and we know you will feel stronger and healthier!

And of course, top it off with a structured workout program at NSAC! Stop by the front desk, so we can design a workout to fit your individual needs. Here's to your heart!

Seared Florida Tuna with Avocado & Mango Salsa

A protein-packed feast for 4!

Ingredients

  • 1-pound sushi grade Florida yellow fin tuna loin
  • 1 tablespoon blackened seasoning blend
  • 1 ripe, Florida avocado, seeded, peeled and cut in 1/2-inch dice
  • 1 ripe Florida mango cut in 1/2-inch dice
  • 1/4 cup sweet red peppers, diced
  • 1/4 cup yellow peppers, diced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh jalapeno, diced fine
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Season all sides of the tuna loin with the blackened seasoning.
  3. Sear tuna in the hot oil until browned but still pink in the center, about 15 to 20 seconds on each side.
  4. Remove seared tuna from the pan and set on a paper towel to rest.
  5. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine avocado, mango, diced peppers, jalapeno, cilantro and lime juice.
  6. Stir to combine; taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  7. To serve tuna, place an even amount of salsa on each serving plate.
  8. Using a very sharp knife, slice seared tuna thinly across the grain.
  9. Arrange the sliced tuna around the salsa.
